2 week Check Up
Today, Anthony had his 2 week check up and his first appointment with a pediatrician. Since there are no pediatricians at the health clinic on the base we're stationed at, we've opted to continue to see doctors at Naval Hospital Pensacola - even if it is a 45 minute drive. Dr. Southwick was very funny and has a very dry sense of humor...I think we'll stick with him! Anthony is now up to 8lbs 4oz. He's gained 7oz in 7 days, so that's good! He's past his birth weight, and that's important. His head has also grown 1cm! It is now 37cm. His length is still measured at 20 inches and I asked the doctor if that was ok. He said it's really dependent on who is doing the measuring. Basically, they try to stretch Anthony out on this table and mark where is head is and where his foot is. But, if you've ever seen an almost naked newborn, they don't exactly lay still for something like that. So he could have very well grown...but it's no big deal right now if he hasn't. We also talked about using pacifiers and pumping and using a bottle to feed Anthony on some occasions. Since he's gaining weight pretty steadily, we don't really need to worry about "nipple confusion." He likes the pacifier, but spits it out a lot and it makes him upset...so I tend to let him suck on my pinky finger still to lull him to sleep after eating. Anthony is also being started on Vitamin D drops. They smell like Flinstones Vitamins X 1000 and it's yellow and stains everything. Since it's not wise to let Anthony out in the sun just yet to get that Vitamin D, this will help. After the appointment, we had a nice time shopping at the Navy Exchange and Commissary...he did great! He loves his Baby Bjorn--that thing is a life saver for me!
